New councillors
Congratulations to all the new councillors elected to represent the people of Welwyn Hatfield on the borough council. You might think cycling is a county issue, but the reality is that getting new cycle routes is mostly linked to developer contributions from new buildings. So when you are planning new housing, please make sure the cycle routes and cycle storage are built from the start, encouraging good habits.

For example, at the Welwyn Street Market in June a common issue local residents raised with us is the lack of a safe off road cycle route from Oaklands and Welwyn to Monks Walk School and then on to the existing cycle path to WGC. Many people thought the new housing planned should pay for this.
If you want help on cycle routes and storage for new housing or a tour of cycling provision in your ward please ask us. Back of a tandem tour is an option…
Alban Way ride 21st July 2019 (Comet 70th event)

We are contributing to the Comet 70th events with a cycle ride. This is a family friendly and suitable for children who are able to ride without stabilisers. (Balance bikes are fine!) Starting from Wrestler’s Bridge Hatfield we cycle along the traffic free Alban Way past Lemsford Road Station (opened in 1942, closed in 1951) used by the de Havilland workers and then on to the fabulous Nast Hyde Halt which has recently gained some actual railway track. Full details are on our events page.
A1057 jam buster

An email warning from Herts County Council arrived recently warning me of delays along the A1057 Hatfield Road due to gas works at near Oaklands College. Now it’s the summer and so no excuses for not cycling.
My daily ride from Birchwood to St Albans is a consistent 33 minutes. So if the A1057 is now taking you longer than half an hour, you could save time and keep fit by joining us commuting on the Alban Way.
Only your gym membership and petrol payments need to suffer.
