Scott’s Grotto via the Cole Green Way

18th April 2022 @ 11:00 am - 5:00 pm

WelHatCycling riders inside Scotts Grotto, 2018

Starting from Hatfield railway station, AL9 5AB, at 10:45 sign in for 11:00 start, we will also pick up from Morrisons in Welwyn Garden City, AL7 1RY, if required at approximately 11:25.  Please note there is a £2.00 charge for entry.

The route

We ride the newly resurfaced Cole Green Way to Hertford where we will pause for lunch at Hertford Castle park.   There will be time for anyone needing to get coffee and food to go into town or feel free to bring your own picnic. (If the weather is poor we will stop in the town centre for cafes instead.)

After lunch we cycle on alongside the river Lea to Ware and then to Scott’s Grotto which opens at 2pm.  A donation of £2.00 per visitor is requested.   The photo shows the ride in 2018 when we all gathered inside the Grotto for a team picture.  Spot the shells!  Do visit the website for the history of this remarkable garden feature dating from 1760.  Please note the Grotto is unlit so a torch (bike lights!) is needed and flat shoes are recommended.  Scott’s Grotto is accessed via uneven steps and is not suitable for those with limited mobility or wheelchair users.

After an hour for the visit to see the Grotto and the Summer House we will retrace our route home.

The ride

WelHatCycling rides go at a slow and sensible pace suitable for all riders of all ages.

The ride is just under 24 miles and climbs 664 feet.  However most of this is on the old railway coming back, so the climbing is steady and on a good surface.

The route will take us along some busier roads in west Welwyn GC, in Hertford and in Ware. It is possible to push along pavements where needed.  There is a steep hill up to the Grotto, but it’s not far to push (and you can expect the ride leader to get off and push it!)   We therefore would not expect this ride to be suitable for the very youngest children.

Please make sure you bring lights for the Grotto, locks as the bikes will have to be chained up outside the venue, your entry fee and the usual waterproofs and inner tube and kit incase of a puncture.
