New cycle path under construction in Welwyn Garden City

By | 21st October 2022

It’s great to see the start of work creating the new two way cycle path over Hunters Bridge, opening up safe off road cycle access to Welwyn Garden City town centre for people on cycles in Panshanger, Haldens and from the existing Broadwater Road/Bessemer Road cycle path.

The new cycle path will fully open in early 2023. At the moment it’s just a few yards of construction, but a great taste of things to come. Our thanks to Herts Highways for permission to use this photo of the first few yards of the route.

One benefit already delivered is the replacement of the congested two phase pedestrian crossing of Osborn Way with a wider single phase toucan (pedestrian and cycle crossing). So less waiting to get across to Waitrose from the town centre. This the view from the end of the cycle path looking south towards the former Debenhams store and the pedestrianised section of Stonehills.

Finally another Herts Highways photo of the corner around from Osborn Way to Bridge Road showing the kerb separating the cycle path from the main road.

We will keep you posted as this important scheme progresses. It’s the first off road cycle route in to the centre of WGC, so we look forward to seeing more people shopping on cycles.
