DIY rides in Welwyn Hatfield

We appreciate not everyone is able to join our monthly rides.  We’ve also been asked for rides suitable for families with children.  So here are some local circular routes, designed to maximise the use of off road cycle paths or quieter side roads.

Welwyn Garden City – Proposed Centenary Circular

As part of the WGC Centenary celebrations in 2020 and to complement the centenary walk, we are putting together a similar cycling route.  Download the gpx file, but be aware that this is a proposal only at this stage.

Tour de Welywn

We suggest you start from the rear entrance to Welwyn Garden City station.  This mostly level 4.1 mile route takes covers cycle paths beside main roads in east side WGC, plus a section of National Cycle Route 61 along quiet roads in Woodhall.  There are safe crossing points for all main roads.  Allow an hour for this ride. Tour de Havilland

A mostly level 4.2 mile route round the west side of Hatfield including the Alban Way (part of  National Cycle Route 61) and the cycle paths in the Hatfield Business Park.  Look out for the old airport control tower.  We suggest you start the ride at the restored Nast Hyde Halt on the Alban Way.   Again, all main road crossings have islands, subways or traffic lights except at the roundabout at the end of Wellfield Road.  Please take extra care at this location.  Download the gpx file.

WelHat short circuit

This is a longer 5.7 mile route which includes some minor slopes as you climb out of the Lea valley in each direction.  We suggest you start from the lovely Mill Green Museum or alternatively from the south lake car park at Stanborough Park.  Most main road crossings are subways, islands or traffic lights, but do take particular care at the following locations:

  • Leaving Mill Green heading north to Welwyn Garden City we suggest you push along the pavement from the north end of Mill Green Lane until you reach the cycle path along side the A1000, rather than crossing this busy road twice.
  • When crossing the end of Wellfield Road at the junction with Comet Way (A1001), please take extra care as cars exit the roundabout at speed.

Welwyn Hatfield grand tour

This is a 12.7 mile loop which joins up the three routes described above. There are some minor hills when cycling out of the Lea valley.  Most main road crossings are subways, islands or traffic lights, but do take particular care at  Mill Green heading north to Welwyn Garden City.  We suggest you push along the pavement from the north end of Mill Green Lane until you reach the cycle path along side the A1000, rather than crossing this busy road twice.  Download the gpx file.
